Nightmare Adventures - The Witch's Prison is a puzzle adventure game that combines object hunting with mind-bending puzzles, all within a story of suspense. It tells the adventures of Kiera Vale, a girl who is in search of her family story. The plot is told in a flashback, as she recalls what happened during her visit to an old, abandoned place she inherited from her parents, the Blackwater Asylum. Through the cutscenes along the game, we learn that Kiera receives a letter, telling that her birth parents were involved in the building of the asylum, and she is invited by the groundskeeper to have a look at the place. Once immersed in the investigation and the dark corridors of the asylum, Kiera discovers that something quite sinister is going on in that place, something that may lead to an unexpected turn of events.
So the adventure begins, placing you in front of the asylum. As expected, doors and entrances are locked so you need to figure out a way to enter. For that you need to explore the surroundings to see if there is anything you can use to gain access to the place. Objects may be hidden just so cleverly that you will need to examine every single place on the scene, as items may be placed within a nest high on a tree, or below a carpet that you may have just ignored. Of course you need to figure that out by yourself, but in case you need help the hints can tell you the location of an item and even how to advance. Also, instructions and tutorial prompts can be activated when you start, giving you subtle clues to help you solve a situation. The cursor will turn into a hand when you can pick up an object, an eye when there's something to look into the area, or into footsteps indicating you there is another location to examine. Objects that can be of any use will be available in your inventory for you to use or combine depending on the moment. Hidden-object scenes are quite scarce and of average difficulty, and most of the time you are faced with logic mini games and puzzles challenging you to calculate figures and decipher enigmas of all sorts.
